The different types of household electrical outlets

An electrical outlet is a connector used to distribute the current in the house and to which we connect the equipment that needs an electrical power source to operate.

Why are we talking about “female” and “male” electrical outlets?

One of the very first things to know about the different types of electrical outlets is that there are “female” outlets and “male” outlets.

The “female” sockets are the electrical sockets strictly speaking: they are used to distribute (or relay) the electric current and consist of a base — most of the time fixed and wall-mounted, but which can be mobile as a c. This is the case for extension cords — two holes and sometimes a conductor (metal rod).

Male sockets are, in fact, all the cables, plugs, and connectors that plug into female sockets. Male plugs are made up of pins (nickel or brass) that are inserted into female sockets.

What are electrical outlets used in France?

Because all the countries in the world do not have the same standards, the same voltages, and the same types of electrical networks, there are many different kinds of sockets on the globe: 16 in all, classified from A to N. In France, the different types of sockets used are:

Type C sockets are the classic sockets without earthing and are only composed of two rods.

Type E and F socket outlets, which include an earth connection.

Indoor electrical outlet or outdoor electrical outlet?

Indoor electrical outlets are, of course, those found inside homes to power electrically operated devices. Today, indoor power outlets must be equipped with a child safety device (moving shutter) complying with the NF C 15–100 standard to protect users- especially children- from indoor power outlets.

In a house, electrical outlets must be installed at:

· At least 5 cm from the ground for conventional power outlets.

· More than 60 cm from the shower or bathtub in the bathroom.

· At least 12 cm from the ground for sockets supplying an oven.

Outdoor electrical outlets are those found on balconies, terraces, and the garden. They must be located at least 1 m from the ground and have an IP protection index (enclosure protection index) of 25. To protect these types of electrical outlets from dust and bad weather, they are equipped with protective seals and a small removable valve.

What is the difference between a surface-mounted socket and a recessed socket?

Among the different types of sockets that exist, a distinction is also made between surface sockets and recessed sockets.

Surface sockets “come out of the wall”: they are often installed during home renovations because they are the easiest sockets to put in place. Indeed, there is no need to make a hole in the wall; the connection is made directly in the socket box.

Recessed sockets are the most aesthetic because they are much less visible than surface sockets… But much more complicated to install: grooves in the support, duct passages, etc. If you acquire a new home today, all the sockets in your home will be recessed.

Zoom on all types of electrical outlets

To distribute or relay power in a home, there are different types of electrical outlets:

  • The classic wall outlet to which you plug the TV, electric heater, phone charger, etc.
  • The audio/video socket lets you connect a television, speakers, a projector, etc.
  • As its name suggests, the programmable socket has a programmer that allows you to define the power times and the cut-off times for certain electrical appliances in the home.
  • The USB port allows direct connection (without an adapter) of smartphones, digital cameras, etc.
  • The TV, Satellite and FM sockets are used to reproduce an audio or audio + video source in the house and are connected to an aerial socket.
  • The T-shaped telephone socket is a socket used to connect fixed telephones and which we are led to come across more and more rarely in homes!
  • The RJ 45 socket now replaces the T-shaped telephone socket: it is used to distribute a network signal in the house.
  • The shaver socket is a bathroom-specific socket used to plug-in electric shavers.
